Words by Kate Staniforth, Marketing Manager
When I was 16, I was convinced I’d one day own a deli or bakery, I was lover of cooking and baking and wanted to have a little cafe I could make my own. That was my main goal right up until a GCSE open evening, when a conversation with a Media Studies teacher introduced me to the world of creativity, storytelling, and advertising. From that moment on, my path shifted.
I took Media Studies at GCSE and A‑Level, then went on to study Media Studies: Journalism at university, imagining a future in lifestyle and homeware magazines.
But like many graduates of my year, Covid‑19 changed everything. The magazine graduate scheme I’d secured fell through, and I suddenly found myself job‑hunting in a market where hardly anyone was hiring.
I eventually landed a role in marketing for a craft company, where I learned the foundations of content creation, SEO, influencer management, and social media. It was a great start, but I knew I wanted more room to grow.
The main chapter: Joining Resource
When the opportunity came up to join Resource as a Digital Marketing Graduate, I took a chance and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
The graduate role wasn’t just a job, it was an opportunity for me to explore, experiment, and evolve. I’ve now been part of Resource for nearly five years, in which I’ve been trusted with projects that pushed me creatively and professionally. I’ve worked on social media strategy, podcast development, event management (including a week in Texas that sparked an unexpected love for country music), shoot days, and multi‑channel campaigns across industries from construction to pharmaceuticals.
What makes Resource special is the people. I’ve had mentors who invested time in teaching me the realities of marketing, colleagues who encouraged me to try new things, and a team that genuinely wants each other to succeed. Every challenge has come with support, and every opportunity has come with trust.
That environment has shaped me into someone who feels confident stepping into new territory, which is why I’ve recently begun a new chapter as Marketing Manager. Now, I get to focus on telling Resource’s story to the world and supporting our sales team in bringing in new business.
An unexpected journey
Resource has played a huge part in who I’ve become. It’s helped me grow from a graduate finding her feet into a confident young woman ready to take on whatever comes next.
My career journey is a reminder that the path you think you is perfect for you can shift with a single conversation or an unexpected opportunity. Every twist has led me to somewhere I never imagined, and I’m grateful for where it’s brought me today. And who knows…maybe one day that café dream will still become a reality.
